Course Ref: 2021-2022
Start Date: Tue, 5th Oct 2021
Register By: Tue, 5th Oct 2021

An essential guide to all Chairs giving an overview on what to focus on throughout an academic year to enable effective governance. Using the DfE Competency Framework for Governance the course will explore the knowledge, skills and behaviours required to head up a successful governing board.  This will cover the Chair’s role in strategic leadership, accountability and building an effective team through a combination of background ‘theory’ and practical examples.

  • Value-added scrutiny: how can Governors build on the central support provided by the Federation (e.g. finance, health and safety, risk monitoring) by using meetings and visits to focus on curriculum and student welfare?
  • How can Governors support curriculum improvement and development?
  • How should Governors ratify policies for which they are responsible (e.g., safeguarding, Prevent, SRE, anti-bullying)
  • Building a cohesive AGB: what do Chairs need to do to ensure Governors maintain skills, knowledge and focus (DoIs, training, attendance records, Academy links)
